In a digital era where everyone has their own media platform, freedom of expression seems limitless. Social media has become the new stage where anyone can speak out. But how free are we, really?
“ILUSI BEREKSPRESI” invites viewers to explore the complex reality of digital freedom through interwoven stories from across Indonesia. In Indramayu, migrant workers rely on social media as a lifeline for communication and even rescue efforts, though they must tread carefully to avoid endangering themselves. In Labuan Bajo, the local startup KawanBike emerged during the pandemic, proving that technology can be a solution when used wisely. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Yani’s Dapur Tara Flores showcases how traditional values can thrive and adapt in the digital age. In Madiun, even in today’s digital era, there are still efforts to preserve literacy and traditional reading practices.
This film is the final installment in the “Made in Indonesia” trilogy, complementing the narratives of digitalization’s impact after “Quick Money Ventures”—which tells the bittersweet stories of former migrant workers building their small businesses—and “Data, Power, and Privacy”, which delves into the fate of migrant workers amid privacy issues.
Through these diverse perspectives, “The Illusion of Expression” prompts us to reflect: does the convenience of technology truly grant us freedom, or does it create new, invisible boundaries?
A critical portrait of the paradox of freedom in the digital era, where innovation and tradition, liberty and limitation intertwine to shape a new landscape of contemporary Indonesian life.
